Lifted from its subterranean origins, ilmenite is extracted as a dark, heavy rock. Through industrial processes, it metamorphoses into a fine white pigment: titanium dioxide.
In ‘SPF 1240’, I focus on this unique material journey: from its particular sensorial qualities to wider cosmetic usage. Creating a ceramic assemblage, I use ilmenite and titanium dioxide in all its myriad forms alongside the ceramic: as mineral, powder, glaze and suncream.
Each element of ‘SPF 1240’ has been created, shaped or gathered by my own hands.
