RAM Gallery Exhibition Work: 'Glycyrrhizin'
Project Type
Ceramic Sculpture
Date
2024
'Glycyrrhizin' takes its name from the sweet tasting active of the liquorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra). Used as an emulsifier in food and cosmetic industries, it is a global Scandinavian staple. Although it is viewed as an everyday flavour (and childhood taste memory for many) in Norway, excess consumption can alter body fluid balance, heart rhythm and even be fatal.
I have created a glaze that mirrors the viscosity, colour and texture of hardened liquorice. The more you circle the ceramic sculpture, the more its form seems to modify or transform. It is both pleasing and unsettling, like glycyrrhizin itself.
Exhibited at Galleri RAM in 2025.
